About me and my approach
Embracing Diversity and Nurturing Growth
I understand that every individual's journey is unique, and my practice is rooted in a deep commitment to inclusivity and understanding. As a mother of three toddlers and someone who has worked in diverse intercultural contexts internationally and domestically across Canada, I recognize the importance of creating a safe, non-judgemental, and welcoming space for all, irrespective of ethnic background, culture, or identified gender. I firmly believe that the therapeutic process is enriched when we celebrate our diverse experiences and perspectives. I also recognize challenges of parents and families who are going through life challenges and transitions.
Professional Expertise and Accomplishments
With over a decade of experience in the field, I have had the privilege of supporting children, youth, and adults facing trauma, surviving sexual abuse, experiencing cancer treatment, and various psychological challenges in diverse communities worldwide. From Mongolia to Botswana, Squamish to Edmonton, and Montréal to St. John's, I have gained invaluable insights into the human experience and honed my skills as an art therapist, counsellor, policy advisor, and psychosocial support advisor.
A Lifelong Learner and Dedicated Educator
My educational journey has been an ongoing pursuit of excellence. From attaining my MA in Art Therapy at Concordia University (Montréal) to my current pursuit of a Ph.D. at Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John's), I have continuously expanded my competencies and knowledge base. Additionally, I am committed to staying abreast of the latest research, methodologies, and best practices through continuous professional development, publications, conferences, and trainings. As the Past President of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (2016-2019) and Editor in Chief of the Canadian Journal of Art Therapy, I have actively contributed to the growth and recognition of Art Therapy as a powerful healing modality.
Comprehensive Training and Specializations
In my desire to provide the highest quality care, I have undertaken various specialized trainings, including intercultural leadership, suicide prevention, risk assessment and management, trauma-informed art therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, Dermatini's Value Determination Methods, and grief and bereavement counseling. These tools empower me to offer a holistic approach that nurtures emotional well-being and resilience in my clients.
Making a Difference through Community Programs
I take pride in contributing to the well-being of my community through the development and coordination of programs. One such program is the peer support narrative exposure therapy initiative for the Association for New Canadians in Newfoundland and Labrador. Witnessing positive transformations through these initiatives fills my heart with immense joy and purpose.
